Four Questions for...

Maike Schöttner Sieler

Scholar in the Study of Religions and in Critical Algorithm Studies, working as a scientific staff member in the area of event and project management and science communication

1. ChatGPT has an answer for everything – what do you ask it?

Why is it hiding from its users how many natural resources are needed to keep it running, and for what the generated data is being used?

2. The (research) question you torment everyone with?

How can we reclaim social spaces from algorithmic governance?

3. If you were an app, you’d be… And why?

I would be an app that helps its users see the hidden social and environmental costs of AI, because it is vital to understand how AI shapes our spaces in ways that we evaluate as unwanted. Only with knowing about AI’s hidden costs can citizens make informed decisions regarding their AI use.

4. So tell us, how do you feel about (digital) religion?

Having done my PhD in the Study of Religions, I consider religion – digital and non-digital – a shaping social factor that I am eager to study, using qualitative methods.
