Senior Academic Guest Fellowship

Weiterführende Informationen

Eligibility and Duration

Applicants must be scholars who hold a tenured or tenure-track position or equivalent at an academic institution of higher education or research.

The duration of the stay is usually 1–3 months, though longer stays may be possible upon request.

To ensure fruitful collaboration and engagement in dialogue, the URPP strongly recommends that the fellowship be scheduled during the University of Zurich's lecture periods. These generally occur from mid-February to the end of May/1st week of June and from mid-September to 3rd week in December. July and August are typically avoided as staff absences make intensive academic exchange less feasible. For stays lasting more than one month, at least half of the total duration should fall within one of these lecture periods.

Financial Support

The URPP provides allowances and travel expenses.

Allowances for senior fellows range from CHF 1'000 up to CHF 3'000 per stay, or about CHF 1'000 per month.

Additionally, travel expenses are covered according to the general rates of the SNSF (Swiss National Science Foundation).

Successful applicants are required to apply for additional funds from sources such as their home institution, the SNSF Scientific Exchange programme, or other funding bodies.

If applications for additional funding were submitted but ultimately unsuccessful, the applicant might request for additional financial support by the URPP.

Expectations and Integration

Senior Academic Guests are expected to:

- Work primarily at the URPP facilities

- Be integrated into all activities of the URPP.

- Integrate into one cluster fitting their research plans.

- Organize a one-day workshop together with their endorsing URPP (Co-)PIs on one of the overarching issues.

- Possibly give a public lecture.

- Work towards an interdisciplinary publication or another tangible research "result".

Application Process and Requirements

Applications may be submitted four times a year: 1 March, 1 June, 1 September, and 1 December. It is generally recommended to apply 4–6 months before the intended stay.

Applications must be submitted in coordination with a member of the URPP, who will act as the endorsing contact.

Required application documents to be uploaded in our application form include

  • a CV which must include a list of publications
  • an outline of the research project/plan during the stay, demonstrating alignment with the URPP's core research areas or with specific projects.
  • an indication of planned or possible collaboration with at least one of the projects, of the clusters or with individual members of the URPP,
  • possible starting date(s) and duration,
  • orientation about how to finance the stay (including planned or submitted applications for third-party funding, such as SNSF Scientific Exchange or Collegium Helveticum Senior Fellowship, which requires a minimum stay of three months).

Important Note: Health (and other) insurances are solely the responsibility of the academic guests.
